Hackers steal AT&T customer details

Australian IT - Hackers steal AT&T customer details (Correspondents in San Francisco, AUGUST 30, 2006): "AT&T has admitted to a major privacy breach against its online shopping site's customers.

The telecommunications provider said that computer hackers illegally accessed credit card data and other personal information from several thousand customers who bought DSL equipment from the online store.

The phone company said it would notify 'fewer than 19,000' customers whose data was accessed during the breach.

The company said it noticed the hacking 'within hours,' immediately shut down the online store, notified credit card companies and has begun working with law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident and find the hackers.

It said it would also pay for credit monitoring services to assist in protecting the customers involved.

A spokesman was not immediately available to provide additional details."
