Several companies hit by the Zotob virus continued to show significant slowdowns on their Web sites, according to Keynote Systems Inc., a San Mateo, Calif., company that monitors Internet performance of sites.
ABC.com, for instance, took 24 seconds to serve up pages to users from 1 to 4 p.m. yesterday, longer than the normal response time of two to three seconds, but the site returned to normal performance by late afternoon, Keynote reported.
On Tuesday, however, the staff at ABC's 'World News Tonight' resorted to handwriting and typing up copy on typewriters to supplement working computers, spokeswoman Cathie Levine said.
At CNN, about 100 computers were hit worldwide, starting in New York at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg said. The attack prompted the network to extend Wolf Blitzer's Washington-based program 'The Situation Room' by a half hour to discuss the story while also making sure that the technology in New York was working before switching to the 'Lou Dobbs Tonight' program in Manhattan, Goldberg said.
